The nurse alerted the family for a simple cold, yet she overlooked very serious illnesses. My grandmother's leg had been swollen like a boot for a week, and we didn't realize it until we went to see her and took her to the emergency room, where she was admitted due to the severity of the swelling. They told us at the nursing home that the primary care physician had increased her furosemide dosage, but what good is that if they don't check whether or not the medication is actually being taken? They give it to her, and if she takes it, fine, and if she spits it out, fine too, despite knowing that the person has dementia and rejects the medication. Because she wasn't taking her medication, my grandmother became so seriously ill that she passed away. Her last night at the nursing home, she was on an oxygen mask. When the nurse called the ambulance the next morning around 8:30 a.m., my grandmother was in terrible condition, suffocating, so much so that she ended up in a semi-coma. She must have removed the oxygen mask during the night, and no one came to check on her. Nothing could be done for her. On a separate and infinitely less important topic, if the elderly have a gold ring or medal, they disappear... just like dentures; we had to make two for him and in the end he was left with none.
