Catalan modernism (art nouveau), Gothic, Moorish. 1902 "At a historical moment when public administrations did not provide for the helpless, Mayor Pau Estapé i Maristany promoted the creation of a charitable asylum dedicated to the care of the sick, poor at home, nursing home, helpless children and the indigent. The main building, designed by Gaietà Buhigas Monravà, author of the Columbus Monument in Barcelona, was inaugurated in 1902. Currently it is still a privately owned nursing home that provides assistance to residents of El Masnou."

It took me a while to decide to write this review, but with it I hope that no one else has to go through what my grandmother went through living in this residence. I won't go on too long because it's not worth it. My grandmother lived here for years, at first everything was fine, my grandmother was self-employed and, therefore, she didn't bring them any work. Everything changed after the pandemic, since from then on my grandmother began to need more attention due to the onset of dementia. From then on, the deterioration of my grandmother's health was notable, to the point of having two strokes that no professional at the center found out about. On another occasion, they called us to rush to see my grandmother, since it seemed that she was about to die. When the ambulance arrived, the medical staff detected that something was wrong… The hospital decided that my grandmother could not return to the residence and, later, we discovered that she was being given 11 medications unnecessarily, including sedatives such as fentanyl and other powerful ones. After this admission to the hospital, the family decided that she could not return to the Casa Benèfica. The doctors at the new center where she was admitted did not know what pathologies these medication guidelines were linked to. What I am explaining is only a summary of the things that happened, the ones that I consider most serious because there is no need to go into more detail, but I know that my grandmother's case is not the only one, since this is a town and people talk among themselves. Relatives of other residents also suspected that they were being overmedicated, we don't know for what reasons, but from my point of view, this was how they managed to keep my grandmother still and quiet. My grandmother died last year, taking only 2 medications, but we will always be tortured by the fact that we couldn't have done more for her and not taken her out of this residence sooner. With all due respect to the staff who work there, since the main problem with this place is who is in charge, if you are looking for a dignified end for your loved ones, this residence is not the place you are looking for.

I have known this residence for years, my wife's family is very connected to the town and its organizations. It has always been a residence very connected to the town. A large part of the people of Masnov have always had it as a reference. That is why I don't remember ever hearing so many complaints and criticisms of the house before. You go around the town and you are surprised by some of the comments that you hear. Being the way it is, a foundation, the board of trustees should take measures in this regard, since it is impossible that they have not heard these types of comments. Sometimes, I feel like being the one to contact the president or the board of trustees myself to ask what is happening. If a management or management team has been chosen that is not capable of carrying out its functions, whether due to ignorance, incapacity, lack of preparation, training, negligence, lack of commitment..., this board of trustees must look for a solution. We must try to make our iconic residence a place of peace and rest for our elders again. I don't think it's normal to hear so many complaints about a place where our relatives or loved ones will spend their last days. I hope this doesn't remain in a drawer and in a while, instead of hearing negative comments, we hear the opposite.

The truth is, I'm disappointed with the treatment we received. On the day of arrival, everything was very nice and they said very kind things. However, the center's director didn't appear at any point, which surprised us, since both at the day center where my mother-in-law had been before and at the residence where my parents are, the first thing we saw upon arrival was the director. But well, that's understandable. What I really don't understand is how, after requesting several meetings with her, we always ended up meeting with the social worker, because the director always found some excuse not to attend the meeting without notifying us in advance. But we can forgive that too. Then there's the psychological support my mother-in-law received, or rather, the support she DIDN'T receive. And we had already warned them before her admission that it was very important, since she was going through a difficult time and needed help. And finally, what has hurt us the most is that after my mother-in-law's passing, the person who runs a center with a history of over 125 years didn't even bother to call the family to offer condolences. I truly don't understand the lack of humanity in this institution. We are all human and can make mistakes, but I believe that above all, we are people and deserve some humanity and comfort. I don't think I'm asking for anything extraordinary. In fact, of all this, what truly hurts me the most and what has outraged me the most is this lack of humanity I've witnessed in an institution that should be striving for precisely the opposite. "Person-centered care." That's what it says on the website; perhaps the person who runs the center should apply that methodology and not just write it on a website. I don't expect a response, because I don't intend to reply, but I hope and wish for the sake of those still living there that you improve and work on person-centered care, as that's precisely what we, the families, hope for. Anyway, I know it's just an opinion, but... it hurts.

A spectacular modernist building, with a tower crowned with a glazed ceramic dome that is a joy, a medieval window and the stairs leading into the building. It is from 1901 and its condition is perfect, in a very quiet neighborhood, now it is private property and is part of the architectural heritage of Masnou.
